Aged 59 he is a Chartered Surveyor from London who started racing in 1979.
In a long race career Hugh has been involved in the following: Rallying (Mini & Lancia Beta). Renault 5TS Championship. Production Saloons (Dolomite Sprint, BMW 3.0CS, Capri, VW Golf, Talbot Sunbeam Lotus). Classic Saloons (Mk1 Lotus Cortina & 3.8 Mk 1 Jaguar). Thundersaloons (Escort BDA, Stars & Stripes Manta Pontiac, Toyota Supra Pontiac, Cosworth Sierra). Multi Sports. National Saloons (Cosworth Sapphire, Vauxhall Cavalier). Proton Cup, Caterham Roadsports. TVR Tuscan Challenge. Marcos Mantis Challenge and Privilege Insurance British GT (Marcos).
He first got involved with TVR when he was looking for a series in 1998 which had power, speed and buzz to it. Having liked TVR’s since he was 18 or so and a friend had a ‘65 Griffiths. He was drawn to the TVR series. He was hooked after his first test. He returned to Tuscan Challenge on the Powertour and then to DTEC when the factory challenge folded in 2004.
As for circuits of choice, when asked Hugh was very clear ‘In the UK, Brands Hatch GP because it is such a challenge has all types of corner and changes in topography and in Europe, Spa because it is such a challenge and such a great circuit especially in a Tuscan’.
The car is supported by his own surveying practice, MLPA Surveyors, this is primarily because the sport gives the firm exposure in a sport where there are a lot of people in Property. He is also supported by Causey Park Farms Ltd, his cousins farming and commercial, holiday and educational enterprise in Northumberland.
The car is in original spec including wheels and tyres and runs a fuel injected 4.5 litre AJP V8 engine mated to a T5 Tuscan Challenge modified Ford Cosworth box. Weighing 870 kilos the car produces around 450 bhp. It is an original Tuscan Challenge car first run by Colin Blower Motorsport. It was first rebuilt at Colin Blowers by Pete Longman. In the past the car has been driven by Tiff Needell as a foot in the water exercise before Blowers built him a car. It was campaigned for a full season by Ian Ashley in 1997 and driven by the late Joe Tandy at Oulton Park in 2005.
